WHEN YOU DON’T GIVE UP YOU CANNOT FAIL!

I am going to tell you a story about Mr. Derek Redmond. He was a runner taking part in the Barcelona Olympics Games in 1992.

“Derek Anthony Redmond is now a retired British athlete. During his career, he held the British record for the 400 meters sprint, and won gold medals in the 4×400 meters relay at the World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games. (Wikipedia).”

The story goes like this.

Derek was favored to win a medal in the 400 meters sprint in the Barcelona Olympics games. He was at the height of his career. He was injury free and he felt good about himself. When the 400 meters sprint started, he went off the blocks like a bullet and was racing along the tracks like a gazelle. Round about 150 meters into the race, the spectators saw Derek started to limp and then fell to the ground. It was clear to everyone there on that day, that Derek was in great agony and had probably suffered a torn hamstring in his heel. The other runners quickly overtook him as he struggle to get up to continue the race. It was a herculean effort on Derek’s part because he was limping and shuffling along the race track. An older man broke through the security guards and ran to Derek’s side. It’s was Derek’s father. Derek’s father told his son, “You don’t have to do this.” Derek’s replied, “Yes, I do!” Derek’s father said “Well then, we are going to finish this together.” Putting his arm on his son, they continued the race, limping and shuffling along the race track. Shortly before the finish line, Derek’s father let him go to complete the race. Derek received a standing ovation from the over 65,000 people from all the nations represented in the stadium.

The lesson we can learn from this story is that not everything that you planned, wished and practiced for, will work out the way you like it to be. Many times you will not get what you want. It is even worse when instead of getting a reward for your efforts, you receive sufferings and abuse and rejection and insults. Sometimes you get all this not from your enemies but from your friends and people who you think you can depend on to help you in your time of crisis.

But you must remember the Derek Redmond story that there is always someone who believes in you and who is concern about your well being. That person is someone who is your true friend, a fellow soldier and a soul mate.

Remember this:

“WHEN YOU DON’T GIVE UP YOU CANNOT FAIL!”

Be the champion that you are. Let your heroic inner self shine forth.
You will receive the standing ovation that you truly deserve.

I will end with this quotation from Les Brown; “You have greatness in you but greatness is a choice; it’s not your destiny. It’s a choice that you have to make every day. ‘Choose Ye this day, whom you will serve’, the mediocre part of yourself or the greatness that you were chosen for”
